It may sound weird, but creating a "double" eyelid is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedures in the world.
A typical complaint of many people of East Asian descent is the lack of a "double" eyelid. This refers to that fold in the upper eyelid, which without, makes the eyes look small and lacklustre. While not all East Asians are afflicted, those who are may be dissatisfied with their appearance since big eyes are generally considered an attractive facial feature.
In some cases, it is also a complaint of people from other areas of the world who may find that the crease in their upper eyelids is poorly-defined from such factors as aging.
One of the techniques of the cosmetic surgical procedure eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is to target this problem and create the fold in the upper eyelid for those who do not have one. In a relatively simple procedure, the cosmetic surgeon performing the surgery may place an incision in the upper eyelid, which is then sutured to create a crease. The length of incision relies on the extent of correction suitable for the individual patient. An alternative is to simply suture a portion of the eyelid to create the crease, however it is believed this method produces results that do not last as long.
Double eyelid surgery remains extremely popular for both women and men in East Asia, as well as in North America. While some believe it is because it makes one look more "Occidental", it is not entirely true. The fact is that a crease in the upper eyelid makes the eyes appear bigger and brighter.
